E-Paper Illuminates the Green Transport

Abstract: The trends revealed in the 2025 Global Sustainable Transport Best Practices Casebook are clear and compelling: Green is the essence of transport development, and intelligence is the path to efficient implementation. The green future of intelligent transport is being quietly illuminated and steadily advanced by these "e-paper" displays.

Jointly organized by the China International Center for Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the release event for the "2025 Global Sustainable Transport Best Practices Casebook" took place at the United Nations on July 16th. The 22 case studies released encompass domains such as transport infrastructure, green and low-carbon technologies, digital and intelligent transformation, and public transport optimization.

An Irresistible Trend: Focus on Green Intelligence

Data from the UN Environment Programme indicates that transport emissions account for approximately one-quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning towards green and intelligent transport has become a critical strategy for nations addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development.
The release of this casebook is not merely a presentation of achievements; it signifies that amidst the global wave of climate action and low-carbon transition, green and intelligent solutions have become an irreversible core trend and an essential pathway. Whether optimizing traffic flow and enhancing efficiency, revolutionizing infrastructure, or promoting behavioral shifts, the concept of "green" has accelerated from a shared vision into tangible practices implemented worldwide.

Low-Carbon Practices: E-Paper Illuminates the Green Transport Landscape

As cities globally seek more sustainable transport solutions, e-paper has evolved beyond being merely a display technology; it has become a tangible embodiment of low-carbon principles. The environmental benefits of e-paper display technology are already shining in numerous green intelligent transport projects worldwide.

E-Paper Bus Stop Signs: It is projected that a single e-paper bus shelter consumes only 17 kWh of electricity annually. Compared to a 32-inch outdoor high-brightness LCD screen, this translates to an estimated annual saving of 596.2 kWh, equivalent to conserving 238.5 kg of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 594.4 kg. The energy-saving and carbon reduction effects are significant.

E-Paper Smart Handles: Unlike traditional handles requiring reprinting, warehousing, and resource-intensive processes for each new advertisement – which is time-consuming, laborious, and generates paper waste – e-paper smart handles enable instant advertisement updates. This aligns with smart city development, enhancing urban intelligence and green image.

Dynamic E-Paper Road Signage: Regarding energy consumption, displays of the same size demonstrate stark differences: an e-paper display consumes only about 3W, whereas an outdoor LCD display typically consumes 250W-300W – approximately 100 times more. The energy efficiency advantage of e-paper display technology is self-evident.

Bus E-Paper Information Displays: Izu Hakone Bus Company in Japan utilizes color e-paper information displays inside its high-speed shuttle buses. Connected to passenger tablets, these displays allow travelers real-time access to local sightseeing highlights and updates, significantly enhancing service intelligence and convenience while adhering to green development principles.

E-Paper Parking Guidance: Large parking facilities, such as Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and commercial centers in Tokyo, Japan, employ e-paper parking guidance screens. Individual bay indicators feature extremely low power consumption. Drivers can locate available spaces quickly, reducing unnecessary cruising, associated fuel consumption, and emissions, thereby improving parking lot operational efficiency.

The Future is Here: E-Paper and Green Transport Co-create the Blueprint

The trends revealed by the "2025 Global Sustainable Transport Best Practices Casebook" are clear and compelling: Green is the essence of transport development, and intelligence is the path to efficient implementation. E-paper display technology perfectly aligns with the core requirements for green intelligent transport infrastructure, serving as a powerful enabler for the sector's green and intelligent transformation.

The green future of intelligent transport is being quietly illuminated and steadily advanced by these "e-paper" displays. As a professional e-paper module manufacturing service provider, DKE will collaborate with industry partners to fully integrate e-paper display products and technologies with the transport sector, driving the digital transformation and intelligent upgrading of transport infrastructure. With continuous technological development and innovation, e-paper displays are poised to contribute significantly more power to global green and intelligent mobility on the path towards a net-zero future.
